Meats and Food in Paraguay: GMO, Healthy, or Organic?
Food quality in Paraguay, particularly regarding GMOs and organic standards, the landscape differs significantly from North America and Europe. Below is a breakdown of the current standards for meat, ingredients, and local sourcing.
The Standard for Paraguayan Meat
In the majority of retail stores across Paraguay, the available meat is effectively grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture-raised, and organic by default. While packaging rarely explicitly carries these labels, the agricultural reality of the country drives this standard.
Due to the abundance of grazing land, cattle primarily roam and consume grass. While soy-fed and grain-fed options do exist, they are the exception rather than the rule.
Visual Verification:
Consumers can verify the diet of the animal by observing the fat color on cuts of meat:
White Fat Indicates the animal consumed a natural, grass-based diet (common in Paraguay).
Yellow Fat Often indicates a grain or corn-heavy diet (common in the US and Europe).
Some Americans complain that "meat doesn't taste right here.” It is because they're used to the corn/soy flavours. It is obvious it is not good for you in the long term, and most end up loving it after a little while.
Best Place to Buy Beef
The best place found for beef is Punto Carne. They offer high quality and low prices. You can try their Mini Tomahawks: 65k per kilo & Costeleta Premium: 55k per kilo.
Note: Their competitor hijacked their Google Maps link, so they are no longer there. The correct location is right here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/y5svX9QnAyGtf4SP7
Labeling and Ingredient Quality
Paraguay’s food manufacturing regulations allow for a wide degree of freedom. Consequently, product quality varies significantly depending on the manufacturer.
It is essential to check the ingredients on the packaging labels. Some products contain high-quality, minimal ingredients, while others may include additives and processing agents similar to those found in US markets.
A major advantage in Paraguay is the cost of high-quality food. "Clean" or organic-grade food, which typically commands a high premium in other countries, is accessible and very affordable here.
Local Markets and Sourcing
Here are some markets nearby, but they are not unique. You should ask locals in your area about the best local markets nearby. Nothing in Paraguay is on Google Maps or other websites.
