Paraguay Is Not Good For You... If You Don’t Like Freedom
Paraguay is not the right place for everyone. In fact, it is not good for you if you do not like freedom.
If you are someone who needs strict order and everything to be perfect, Paraguay is not the place to go. Here, freedom comes with a lot of pros, but it also comes with a lot of cons. It is a double-edged sword: freedom isn’t perfect, but it gives you the liberty to do whatever you want.
Here is the reality of what that freedom looks like on the ground.
The Wild West of Real Estate
Because there are very low rules and regulations, the housing market can have some interesting potential issues. This comes with a major benefit: you can get very cheap housing.
However, you have to be careful.
Zoning is close to nonexistent. You might buy a beautiful house, and next month, they could build a high-rise right next to it that blocks your view and shadows your building. You can see this in the city, big beautiful apartments right next to single-family houses.
Quality varies. You must verify that things are actually done properly. It is not like other places where all buildings follow the same standard. Here, there are really good buildings and really bad buildings. The quality of a house depends entirely on who built it, so you have to do your due diligence.
Meat & Food in Paraguay
The lack of regulation extends to what you eat. You can get very cheap food here, but just like in the housing market, you need to be vigilant.
It is similar to the US in that manufacturers can basically put almost whatever they want in the food. You have to check the ingredient lists carefully.
The Good is that you can get the most healthy, most organic food imaginable here.
The Bad is that you can also get the worst "crap", similar to highly processed American products.
The choice is yours, so you have to be really careful about selecting the right food.
Public Chaos vs. Private Luxury
Paraguay is a very safe country, but life moves a little slower here. Things do get done, especially if you have a little bit of money that you don't mind putting into speeding things up, but the infrastructure reflects that lack of strict government oversight.
You will see that the public roads are not so nice. However, the moment you step into private venues like the malls or restaurants, they are impeccable. They are very beautiful, well taken care of, and super nice.
The Bottom Line
If you’re like someone who just wants everything to be in order and everything to be perfect, well, freedom is not perfect, but it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want. But if you accept that the roads might be rough while the restaurants are world-class, and that you need to be careful with what you buy, life goes really well here.
The chaotic parts are the negative side of Paraguay, but they are also the positive side, because they are proof that you are truly free.
